COVID-19 and your long-acting reversible contraception

The contraceptive implant and some intra-uterine devices (coils) can be used for longer than advised when they were inserted.

What to do if you're worried your device has expired

If your device has expired it is safe to leave it in place even if you no longer need it for contraception.

Implants (Nexplanon)

  • can continue to be used for up to four years after insertion
  • the risk of pregnancy is very low
  • take progestogen only pills until we're able to change your implant

Mirena IUS

  • can continue to be used for up to six years after insertion with no significant reduction in protection from pregnancy

10 year IUDs (like T-safe)

  • can continue to be used safely for up to 12 years after insertion

Jaydess (lower dose hormonal IUS):

  • after three years use condoms
  • or take progestogen only pill until we're able to replace the IUS

Five year copper IUDs (Nova T380):

  • after five years use condoms
  • or take a progestogen only pills until we're able to replace the IUD
